Emergency Dental First Aid Tips You Can Do Until You See Dr. J

Do your best to stabilize the injury or painful area using the information below and call an emergency dentist at our office for an immediate or same day appointment.

  • Severe Toothache:

    1. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
    2. Carefully floss around the tooth to dislodge any food particles or debris that could be causing difficulties.
    3. Use a cold compress placed on the outside of the mouth adjacent to the aching tooth for some temporary pain relief.
  • Chipped or Broken Tooth:

    1. Rinse the area of the damaged tooth with warm water.
    2. Apply pressure with clean gauze to stop any bleeding.
    3. Apply a cold compress on the outside of the mouth to help minimize tooth pain and any swelling.
    4. Any chips or broken off pieces of tooth can be delicately wrapped in wet gauze and brought to the dentist in case they can be used in the dental restoration of the tooth.
  • Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth or Lost Tooth:

    1. Rinse the tooth socket gently with warm water and use gauze and some pressure to stop the bleeding.
    2. For an adult, if you have the tooth, lightly rinse it off if needed—do not remove any attached tissue—and try to place it back in the socket.  The tooth can also be put in a container of milk till you get to the dentist.
    3. A cold compress can help ease pain.

  • Dental Abscesses:

    1. Seek a Fl emergency dentist at our office right away because an abscess could lead to infections in other parts of the body if not treated immediately. In severe cases, this dental problem may require a trip to the emergency room to prevent the infection from spreading further.
    2. Pain can be reduced by a cold compress in the meantime.
  • Gums Swelling or Bleeding Severely:

    1. Rinse the area with a mild salt-water solution.
    2. Apply clean, wet gauze and pressure to stop any bleeding.
    3. Use of a cold compress can help with any swelling and discomfort.
  • Lost Filling:

    1. Cover the area of the tooth where the filling was with a bit of sugar-free gum to help prevent any further difficulties before you receive emergency care from our Fl dentist.
  • Lost Crown:

Put a small amount of toothpaste on the inside of the crown and try to put it back in place.  The toothpaste will help keep it temporarily in place on your way to Dr. J’s dental clinic. If the crown will not go back in place, then carefully wrap it and bring it with you.

  • Broken Wires or Loose Brackets in Your Braces:

    1. Use the clean eraser-end of a pencil and attempt to carefully bend the broken wire out of the way if it’s poking into your gums, cheek or tongue.
    2. Use orthodontic wax to cover the wire or loose bracket to keep it in place until you reach our office for dental services.

What to Expect in Your FL Emergency Dental Visit at Our Office

If you want a dentist in Largo Fl that stands out from other dental practices, then just see what our patients have to say about the emergency dentists on our team. The last thing you need when you are in pain and anxious about a dental procedure is having to sift through dental practitioners for one that is available right now. Look no further—we offer 24 hour dental care because accidents and oral infections don’t adhere to schedules. Bardmoor Family Dentistry stands ready to help you now.

  • After a brief amount of paperwork, our emergency dental team will take the following steps when you arrive:

    1. Full emergency exam with Dr J: The doctor will speak with you to find out what issues you are experiencing and then do a focused oral exam to evaluate the situation.
    2. Periapical x-ray: A periapical x-ray of the problem area shows Dr. J what is happening below the gums. It is important to determine if an oral infection or injury has affected the roots of any teeth or the jaw bone. Knowing the underlying cause of the pain helps Dr. J determine the best immediate course of action for your Florida dental care.
    3. Anesthetic: Dr. J will numb the area as needed to provide immediate pain relief and to prepare the problem area for treatment.
    4. Treatment Procedure: Dr. J does his skilled magic to either handle the dental emergency fully or stabilize the tooth enough so you can carry on until your next appointment to do the needed permanent treatment.  The former may involve a temporary crown, tooth extraction or other procedure until the patient gets a permanent crown, dental implant, bridge, root canal, etc. as needed for full dental restorations.
