The teeth, gums and jaws all work together and require care to stay in good shape. The health of the teeth can affect jawbone health and vice versa. Dr. J is able to resolve specific issues requiring oral surgery right at the Bardmoor Family Dental office so patients don’t necessarily have to go elsewhere to see a specialist in order to preserve full oral health. The Role of Oral Surgery in Implant Placement

Bone grafts or sinus lifts may be needed to support dental implants because missing teeth affect jaw bone health in the following way. The roots of your teeth go deep into the gums and actually stimulate the jaw bone and facial bones near the mouth. That area of the bone is no longer receiving stimulation when the tooth is missing; this can result in bone loss because areas of bone will start being resorbed by the body. The bone loss can also negatively affect the appearance of your face. It may be necessary to have a bone graft and possibly a sinus lift when this has occurred so that an implant can be placed.

  • Bone Graft

This is the addition of bone-like material to the upper or lower jaw to reinforce an area where there are missing teeth. This makes it possible for the bone to support the placement of the titanium post (the implant) that anchors the artificial tooth to the jaw.

  • Sinus Lift

This procedure is performed in cases where the upper jaw is too thin to support a dental implant because the sinus cavity comes down too low. The membrane of the sinus cavity is carefully moved up so the bone graft can be done below it to shore up the bone.

Bone Grafts and Sinus Lifts

People who have suffered severe periodontal disease, who want to replace a missing tooth with a dental implant or who are seeking implant-supported dentures may need bone grafts and sinus lifts. After a tooth has been missing for a number of months, the gums start receding and there can be deterioration of the underlying bone. The jaw bones must be strong enough to support implants so the following needs to be done to determine if a bone graft or sinus lift is needed:

  1. Visual exam: Dr. J will do a thorough visual examination of the patient’s mouth, teeth and gums.
  2. Imaging: X-rays and 3D scans are used to determine if grafts are needed. These images show what is happening with the roots of the remaining teeth. They will also show if there is any bone loss or if the sinus floor has fallen.
  3. Consultation: A discussion of the findings informs the patient of the outcome. If Dr. J has determined that a bone graft or sinus lift is needed, then the patient is scheduled for an appointment to undergo this procedure. Dr. J will use a bone-like material that bonds with the real bone to repair the area.

Even if you have all of your teeth, other issues such as severe tooth decay and gum disease could be affecting your jawbone. This could result in the loss of teeth so it is vital that you speak to Dr. J who is knowledgeable in specific oral surgery techniques.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Dr. J is experienced at tooth extractions including wisdom tooth removal. It’s common to have wisdom teeth removed to prevent future problems. Orthodontic doctors sometimes refer patients to Dr. J to have wisdom tooth extraction before getting braces. This may occur when there is not enough room in the back of the mouth for these molars and the result is crowding and other issues which can negatively affect the alignment of the other teeth.

Wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean. This is especially true if the tooth doesn’t fully erupt from the gums. If you have an impacted, decayed or painful wisdom tooth, Dr. J can extract it. Schedule an initial consultation today to discuss your specific case to see if wisdom tooth removal would be beneficial for your oral health.
